School Year Tutoring
H.O.P.E. Tutoring Center strives to place students in a one-on-one
or one-on-two tutoring situation. The students’ homework
is considered first priority in tutoring. When the homework is
completed, the tutor and student work on an academic area suggested
by the parent or teacher.
To enroll a student for services, a parental guardian must bring
a copy of the most recent report card and a copy of the family
financial information which can be a copy of the free/reduced
lunch letter from the school district or a copy of the most recent
paycheck stub.
Resources: Each tutoring site contains: two
computers with PLATO Educational Software, a library of grade
level reading books, magazines, dictionaries, encyclopedias, reading
and math games and TV/VCR resources. All resources are available
to the student. Refreshments are served daily.
Incentives: The H.O.P.E. Bucks program and a
Spelling Bee encourage achievement. Tutoring and mentoring provide
opportunities for the student to grow in self-esteem.
H.O.P.E. students set a goal to improve their academic grades
and maintain satisfactory conduct and/or show conduct improvement
on their report cards. Achievement of these goals is measured
by the student’s six weeks report card.
Reading Rocks Summer Program
Volunteers provide students with one-on-one mentoring in reading
during the summer months. This program helps students maintain
what they have learned from school year to school year.
H.O.P.E.’s goal is that 75% of participating students will
at least maintain or improve the reading grade-level with which
they entered the program.

Computer Camp
During the summer, H.O.P.E. Tutoring Center hosts a week long
computer camp for 20 students from the school year or Reading
Rocks tutoring program. Our volunteer tutors teach the students
how to use the computers, and at the end of the camp the students
are given their own computer to take home! (Currently, students
will receive registration information by mail.)
